Garden Insurance
Britain is often described as a nation of gardeners, and while millions of us take great pleasure in our patches of land, not all of us stop to think about how valuable the contents of our garden are. Even fewer of us consider whether we need to insure our gardens.
Power Tools
Of course, such things as lawnmowers or other power tools spring to mind as being worth money to thieves, and therefore possibly worth insuring, but there is unfortunately a growing trend of thieves targeting plants and stealing them from domestic gardens, only to pot them up and sell them on at car boot sales and the like.
If this idea sounds strange, just consider how much you could spend in an afternoon at the garden centre, and it soon becomes clear that plants can be a lucrative business.
Check Your Insurance Policy
So how should you insure your garden? Many contents policies will extend at least some cover to possessions left within your property boundaries, but most will insist on security measures (locking items in a shed, for instance). This is obviously not going to be practical for living garden plants, or garden structures such as water features or even garden furniture.
For this to be covered you need to seek out a policy that actively mentions covering garden items. If your policy doesn't mention something explicitly, it's unlikely to cover it when the time comes to make a claim, so if your garden and its contents are valuable to you, speak to your insurer to make sure you're covered.
